Origin and history

The house at 42 Blanqui Street in Tours is a remarkable example of 15th century medieval civil architecture. This building, classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by its wood-paned structure, with horn posts decorated with consoles whose decoration has partially disappeared. The south façade, overlooking the street, preserves original elements such as the corbellations and the enlarged poles, while the north facade, on the courtyard, shows traces of a slate cover today disappeared. The house is composed of two floors on ground floor, with a common roof with two twin dwellings.

The official protection of this monument, which took place by order of 27 June 1946, relates specifically to the facades, roofs and chimneys of the northern rooms. These elements illustrate the construction techniques in vogue at the end of the Middle Ages in cities such as Tours, where wood and torchi dominated. The building also reflects the urban organization of the period, with adjoining houses and corbellations maximizing the living space on narrow plots.

The location of the house, in the centre of Tours (Indre-et-Loire), corresponds to a dense historical area, where medieval buildings are alongside more recent buildings. Although the accuracy of its current location is considered mediocre (note of 5/10), its official address remains 42 Blanqui Street, in an area marked by the city's urban history. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, highlight its heritage interest without providing details on its current use (visit, rental, etc.).
