Origin and history
The house at 7 Rue des Gentilshommes in Quimper is an example of traditional 17th century Breton civil architecture. Its main interest lies in its wooden façade, covered with a crepasing on lattis, characteristic of the urban buildings of that time. This type of structure, both functional and aesthetic, reflects the local construction techniques and the know-how of the artisans of the time.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 22 May 1956, this house is an integral part of the heritage of the ancient center of Quimper. Only the street façade and the corresponding roof slope are protected, highlighting their heritage value. The property now belongs to a private company, and its state of conservation therefore depends on its current owners. The location, although documented, remains approximate according to available sources, with an accuracy considered "passible".
Quimper, the historic town of Brittany, was in the 17th century a dynamic economic and religious center, marked by the activity of business corporations and commerce. Wood-paned houses, such as this one, often served as houses for merchants or artisans, while sometimes sheltering shops or shops on the ground floor. Their preservation offers a tangible testimony to urban life and the social organization of this period.
