Origin and history
The house of Arnac-la-Poste is a 14th century historical monument, located in the commune of Arnac-la-Poste, in Haute-Vienne. This rural complex consists of an old house body, flanked to the south by a circular tower supported by a massive foothill. A small rectangular opening, practiced in this foothill, illuminates the interior staircase, while a wooden staircase serves the floors. The construction was commissioned in 1360 by J. Marcoul, lord of Montmagner, reflecting the defensive and residential architecture of the time.
Over the centuries, additional buildings were added: a barn and a secondary building, later adjacent to the west and east of the main house. The stair turret, an emblematic element of the site, was classified by order of 1 June 1973. This classification specifically concerns the turret (cadastre C 11), highlighting its heritage importance. The site, although partially modified, retains significant traces of its medieval origin.
The location of Arnac-la-Poste, in the former Limousin region, now integrated into New Aquitaine, places this monument in a rural context marked by feudal history. Local lords, like J. Marcoul, played a central role in territorial organization and the protection of the population. The circular tower, typical of the defensive buildings of the period, illustrates this function both residential and strategic, characteristic of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in rural areas.
