Origin and history

The corner house, located 8 Place Jean-Moulin in Beaumont-du-Périgord, is part of a collection of medieval facades dating mainly from the 14th century. These houses, aligned with the square, illustrate the civil architecture of the era, with characteristic elements such as the corners and pointed roofs. Only the north side of the square has retained its entirety, while the south side has only one house with its original corner and medieval roof. The roofs, for the most part, were rebuilt in the eighteenth century, marking a stylistic evolution while preserving the old structure.

There is a special feature in the west side of the house: its garden walls or other facades are directly based on the old city walls. This development testifies to the integration of dwellings into the medieval defensive system, where the ramparts also served as foundations for civil construction. The whole was partially protected by an inscription under the Historical Monuments in 1952, specifically covering the facades and roofs of Parcel C 301.

The location of this monument, on Place des Cornières (now Jean-Moulin Square), reflects the historic importance of this place as the heart of urban life in Beaumont. The houses, with their balconies and redone roofs, offer a tangible example of the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Their preservation enables us to study the construction techniques and lifestyles of the inhabitants of the Périgord throughout the centuries.
