Origin and history

The gallery house located on Rue Laffite in Montignac-Lascaux (Dordogne) is an example of 16th century civil architecture. This building, inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments by decree of 12 January 1931 (amended on 19 May 1931), illustrates the constructive techniques and decorative styles of the Renaissance in Périgord. Its initial location, mentioned as "Merilhou quai" (formerly Vézère quai), reflects its integration into the historic urban fabric of Montignac, a city marked by its medieval heritage and its proximity to major prehistoric sites such as Lascaux.

Gallery houses, frequent in the South-West of France at that time, served both as a home and a place for commercial or social exchange. Their corbelled structure, often made of wood or stone, allowed to enlarge the living space while creating covered spaces for passers-by. In Montignac, a city situated on an important river axis (the Vézère), these buildings testify to the economic and artisanal vitality of the region in the sixteenth century, a period of transition between the Middle Ages and the modern era.

The inscription of this monument in 1931 is part of a desire to preserve the vernacular heritage, then threatened by urban transformations. The available data (in particular via the Merimée database) underline its architectural interest, although its exact location has been adjusted over the sources. Today, its approximate address (1 Rue Lafitte) and its Insee code (24291) clearly link it to the territory of Montignac-Lascaux, in New Aquitaine.
