Origin and history
The log house at 13-15 Thiémanté Street in Besançon is a typical example of 16th century civil architecture. This type of construction, characterized by an apparent wooden frame, was common in medieval and renaissant cities. The building illustrates the know-how of the artisans of the period, combining functionality and aesthetics in a dense urban context.
Classified as a Historic Monument, this house was officially protected by order of 8 July 1942, specifically covering its facades and roof. This recognition underlines its heritage importance in the architectural landscape of Besançon, a city marked by a rich history dating back to ancient times. The building is part of the urban fabric of the old town, close to the Roman arenas, testifying to the superimposition of the eras.
At the time of its construction, Besançon was a prosperous city under Burgundy influence and then Spanish, integrated into the Holy Roman Empire. Wood-paned houses served both as housing, workshops and trading venues for artisans and merchants. Their modular structure allowed flexible adjustments, reflecting the needs of a society undergoing economic and social change.
