Façades sur rue et sur cour et la Roof : inscription par décision du 22 juin 1943
Origin and history
The log house located at 12 rue de Famars in Valenciennes is an example of traditional architecture preserved in northern France. This building, whose facades on street and courtyard, as well as the roof, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 22 June 1943, bears witness to ancient construction techniques still visible in this urban area. In the Hauts-de-Frances, wood-paned houses were common before the massive industrialization of the 19th century.
These houses, often associated with artisanal or commercial activities on the ground floor, reflected a social organization where housing and work coexisted. Their preservation, like that of the rue de Famars, allows today to study the urban and architectural evolution of cities like Valenciennes, marked by their medieval and pre-industrial past.
