Origin and history

The log house, located 2 rue Jean-Baptiste-Salle in Roanne (Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is an emblematic building of the 2nd half of the 15th century. Nicknamed "Maison Bourbonnaise", it is distinguished by its characteristic half-timbers and its immediate proximity to Saint-Étienne's church. Considered one of the oldest houses in the city, it illustrates the local medieval heritage still preserved.

Originally, this house housed a wine tasting cellar dedicated to the wines of the Côte-Roannaise, reflecting the region's historical wine-making importance. Since then, it has been reassigned to host meetings of the Association of Friends of the Museum and the Roanne Media Library. Its inscription in historic monuments in 1949 (decree of 29 December) allowed to protect its facade and roof, now owned by the commune.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Wikipedia, specify that the official address registered in the Merimée base is the 1 Place Maréchal-de-Lattre-de-Tassigny (formerly Place du Château). Although its exact location has been discussed (notation "satisfactory" on Monumentum), its role in Roanne's cultural and heritage life remains important. No information is available on any historical characters related to its construction or initial use.
