House with wooden panels (Box AK 47): inscription by order of 8 August 1988

Origin and history

The log house located at 21 rue Pierre-Chalaud in Uzerche is a historic monument registered since 1988. It was located at the former Mousty Gate, a missing town gate. Its construction dates back to the late 15th or early 16th century, as evidenced by its architectural characteristics. The facade, exceptional for the region, has three levels, the second and third of which are decorated with slices of wood made of ground stone, with crosses of Saint-André integrated in the panels under the windows. The last level is in corbellation, adding to its medieval character.

A square tower, now extinct (circa 1930), was once attached to this house. The support of the windows aligned with the horizontal elements of the wood panels underline the rigor of its design. This type of construction, rare in Limousin, reflects the influence of the architectural techniques of northern France or Burgundy at that time. The house thus illustrates the preserved civil heritage of Uzerche, a city marked by its medieval history and its role as a strong place.

Classified as a historical monument in 1988 (arrested on August 8), this house is a valuable testimony of Renaissance wood-pan construction techniques. Its state of preservation and its decorative details, such as the mouldings and crosses of Saint Andrew, make a remarkable example. The location in Uzerche, a strategic town on the border of Limousin and Périgord, reinforces its historical interest, linked to the defensive urban planning of the period.
