Origin and history

The house at 16 rue Saint-Martin in Laon is a 17th century building, typical of the civil architecture of this period. It is distinguished by its monumental gate, an element protected and inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 15 July 1927. This type of door, often designed, reflects the social status of the owners of the period and the importance attached to the beautification of facades in prosperous cities such as Laon, then administrative and religious center of Picardia.

In the 17th century, Laon was a dynamic city, marked by its role as the historic capital of the diocese and the region. Bourgeois houses, like the one on Rue Saint-Martin, illustrated the wealth of local elites, often linked to commerce, justice or the Church. These houses served as both a residence and a symbol of power, integrated into an urban fabric where architecture reflected social hierarchies. The protection of the doorway of this house in 1927 was evidence of the late recognition of this heritage, in a context of increased preservation of old buildings after the First World War.
