Origin and history
The house at 13 rue Saint-Maurice in Soultz-les-Bains, Bas-Rhin, dates from the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. This civilian building, typical of the Alsatian architecture of this period, was listed as historical monuments in 1997. Its registration reflects its heritage interest, although the available sources do not specify the architectural or historical details specific to this construction.
Soultz-les-Bains, located in the Grand Est region, was at that time a commune marked by a rural and artisanal economy, with a social life organized around public and religious buildings. Bourgeois or notable houses, like this one, often played a central role in urban structure and reflected the social status of their owners. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the evolution of construction techniques and lifestyles in the 19th century in Alsace.
Unlike other monuments in the commune, such as the neo-Gothic church rebuilt in 1848 by architect Charles Morin, this house is not associated with major historical events documented in the sources consulted. Its inscription in the heritage is rather part of an approach of valorizing the ancient building, characteristic of the policies of preservation of the twentieth century.
