Origin and history

The house at 6 rue du Couvent, in Saar Union, is a historic monument listed since 1934. This 17th-century building is distinguished by its Alsatian architecture, including a (orial) lodge originally suspended, later reinforced by a masonry base. A statuette of atlante supports a slab aligned with the dressing room, while allegations are decorated with ironwork motifs and mascarons. The carved front door features ionic pilasters and a lintel decorated with rinceaux and foliage.

Inside, two stone columns frame the housing, and the ceiling of the main room is studded. The elements protected by the 1934 decree specifically include the door and the oriel, witnesses of the local crafts of the time. This type of house reflects the know-how of 17th century Alsatian artisans, mixing functionality and decoration in a developing urban context.

Sarre-Union, located in the Bas-Rhin in the Grand Est region, was at this time a city marked by intense cultural and commercial exchanges, typical of Alsace. Bourgeois houses like this often served as a place of residence for local merchants or notables, playing a central role in the social and economic life of the city. Their preservation now allows us to understand the architectural and urban evolution of the region.
