Origin and history
The 14th century house of Lagrasse is a remarkable example of medieval civil architecture. Located at the corner of Foy Street and a courtyard, it consists of a ground floor, a first floor and an attic divided into three square rooms. The ground floor was once opened on the street by two large arches in the middle of the hangar, separated by a pedestal, while the access to the floor is now made by a modern wooden staircase. This monument illustrates the constructive techniques and domestic uses of the period in Languedoc.
The first floor retains a 14th century ceiling, decorated with exceptional painted decoration. It represents human figures (men and women), coats of arms and grotesque motifs, typical of medieval art. The paintings, made on laths inclined between the soles, use coloured nets dominated by red. These decorative elements, rare for a private dwelling, reflect the probably high social status of its occupants or its role in the community.
Classified Historic Monument by order of 1 October 1930, only that part of the house belonging to Mrs.Sibra — including the corner of Foy Street and its painted ceiling — is protected. This classification highlights the heritage value of the interior decorations, unique in the region. The exact address, 3 rue Foy, and GPS location confirm its anchoring in the medieval village of Lagrasse, a village marked by its monastic and artisanal history.
