Vicaire annuel de Saint-Just - Historical occupant Housed in this house in the 17th century.

Origin and history

This corner house, located in the former "Island Saint-Georges" in Narbonne, dates from the seventeenth century. It belonged to the chapter of Saint-Just and served as housing for the annual vicar. Although the main body on Armand Gautier Street was demolished and rebuilt in the 19th century, the backyard retains a well d'angle, vestige of that time. This well, characteristic of the narbonnaise margins of the 17th century, is composed of three assembled stone elements, forming a baluster curved structure.

The margin supports a niche of angle surmounted by a small paved roof, housing a pulley. An imposte adorns the left, while the shell carved at the bottom of the alveole recalls the decorative motifs of the era. The well, the only protected element, was listed in the Historical Monuments by order of 19 December 1946. Its present state partly reflects Narbonne's religious domestic architecture under the Old Regime.

The exact address, 6 rue Armand Gauthier, places this monument in the historic center of Narbonne, a city marked by its medieval and ecclesiastical past. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), reflecting the limitations of available sources. Today, the site does not seem open to the public, and its current use (housing, religious service or other) is not specified in the archives consulted.
