Origin and history
The arcade house is an iconic building located in Pradelles, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 15th and 17th centuries, it is part of an architectural complex representative of the urban houses of the merchant villages, characterized by arcade galleries on the ground floor. These buildings reflect the prosperity of the village, linked to its military and religious role during the wars of Religion in the sixteenth century.
Pradelles developed in the Middle Ages thanks to its strategic position on the Regordane road, a major commercial road. Protected by ramparts, the village attracted families of officers and wealthy merchants, who built private hotels between the 15th and 17th centuries. The arcade house, located in Place de la Halle, illustrates this fascinating period, with an architectural unit marked by its arcades, symbol of its use both residential and commercial.
The building was listed as historic monuments on 21 June 1999, recognizing its heritage value. Its history is closely linked to the economic and social development of Pradelles, where commercial activities and religious tensions (especially during the Wars of Religion) shaped its urban landscape. Today, the house bears witness to the civil architecture of the time, mixing domestic functions and public spaces under its arcades.
