Origin and history
The Treignac Bretches House is a historic monument whose facade combines two distinct eras. The oldest part, dating from the 14th century, has two slightly broken, finely ground openings typical of civil Gothic architecture. These cut stone elements and grey granite bellows may have belonged to a medieval stall, as suggested by the preserved arcades. The upper levels, now without their original sills, are home to Gothic double moulding chimneys, characteristic of the bourgeois interiors of the period.
The second part of the house, of 16th century style, is distinguished by a protruding turret resting on a curved cap, adding a Renaissance dimension to the building. According to sources, this house was rebuilt in the seventeenth century, although only the original shop openings remain. A spiral staircase, once housed in an inner tower, was reportedly destroyed around 1860. The Hugon du Prat family, associated with the construction, had heraldic weapons evoking Capetian descent: a half-flower of lilies, a keyed heart and a four-leaf clover.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 27 July 1932, this house illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Limousin. Its location on Rue de la Garde, in the heart of Treignac, highlights its role in the historic urban fabric. The interior elements, like the three chimneys per level, show relative comfort for the time, reserved for a local elite. However, the accuracy of its location remains poor (level 5/10), according to available data.
