Origin and history

The house at 27 Grand-Rue in Saverne, in the Lower Rhine, is a historic monument listed since 1929. This building, built in the 4th quarter of the 17th century, replaces an old hostellerie that disappeared in 1636 and rebuilt after 1648. The current building dates from 1685, with remodeling and decoration added in the 18th century.

The inscription for historical monuments, issued by decree of 12 October 1929, specifically concerns the main façade with its oriel and roof. This monument illustrates the Alsatian civil architecture of the late seventeenth century, marked by baroque influences and subsequent developments.

The house is located in the heart of Saverne, a town in the East, in an area marked by a turbulent history, especially during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The hostelleries and bourgeois houses of that time played a central role in local economic and social life, serving as places of welcome for travellers and merchants.
