Origin and history

The house at 5 rue d'Austerlitz in Strasbourg is a monument dating from the first half of the 16th century. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1929, with specific protection for its front door, inscribed by ministerial decree. This building is part of the city's architectural heritage, marked by rich urban history and varied influences over the centuries.

The street of Austerlitz, where this house is located, has been attested since the thirteenth century under the name of rue des Bestiales. It had several successive denominations, reflecting the political and cultural developments in Strasbourg: rue Dauphine (1771, 1819), rue Rousseau (1793), rue du 10 août (1795), then rue d'Austerlitz (1831). During the period of German annexation (1872-1918, 1940-1944), it was called Metzgerstraße.

The Krutenau district, where the street is located, is a historic area of Strasbourg, close to the city centre. The 16th-century house bears witness to the civil architecture of that time, in a city then marked by its status as an imperial free city within the Holy Roman Empire. Its classification in 1929 underscores its heritage importance, particularly for its doorway, a remarkable architectural element of the Strasbourg Renaissance.
