Origin and history

The house at 20 rue d'Austerlitz in Strasbourg was a historic monument dating from the 16th century. It was located in a shopping district close to the city centre, Krutenau, an area marked by a rich urban history since the 13th century. The rue d'Austerlitz, where this house was located, has known several denominations over the centuries, reflecting the political and cultural developments of the region, including its current name in tribute to the Napoleonic victory of 1805.

The house was partially protected in 1929 for its oriel, a characteristic architectural element, but this protection was repealed in 2014. The building was completely destroyed during the bombings of 11 September 1944 during the Second World War. After its destruction, a modern building was rebuilt at its location, without retaining any vestiges of the original construction. The street, now a pedestrian, remains an emblematic place in Strasbourg, despite the disappearance of this historic heritage.

The rue d'Austerlitz, where this house was located, has a complex history linked to the changes of sovereignty in Alsace. It had different names according to the times, such as rue des Bestiaux in the 13th century, rue Dauphine in 1771, or Metzgerstraße during the periods of German annexation (1872-1918 and 1940-1944). These changes reflect the geopolitical tensions that have marked Strasbourg and its region, the Great East, over the centuries.
