Facades and roofs on street and on 18s courtyard and staircase: inscription by decree of 18 June 1929

Origin and history

The house at the 20th, Quai Saint-Nicolas in Strasbourg is a historical monument whose construction spanned between the 16th and 18th centuries. This building illustrates the Alsatian civil architecture of this period, with characteristic elements such as its facades and roofs, as well as an 18th century staircase. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 18 June 1929, recognizing its heritage value.

The Saint-Nicolas wharf, where this house stands, is an emblematic place in Strasbourg, bordering the Ill and testifying to the gradual urbanization of the city between the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. At that time, Strasbourg, a free city of the Holy Roman Empire and then French, experienced a marked economic and cultural development. The bourgeois houses, like this one, reflect the social status of their owners and the influence of successive architectural styles, mixing local traditions and external contributions.

Today, the house of the 20 quai Saint-Nicolas remains a preserved example of the Strasbourg heritage. Its classification in 1929 is part of a broader desire to protect the city's historic buildings, especially after the destruction of the First World War. The protected elements — facades, roofs and staircases — offer an overview of the construction techniques and aesthetic tastes of the eras concerned.
