Origin and history
The house at 1 rue des Serruriers in Sélestat is a civil building built during the second half of the 18th century, specifically in 1770. It is distinguished by its alignment on the street and an exceptional carved decoration, composed of stone sandstone motifs under each window. The metalwork on the top of the door bearing the date of construction and the initials "M.W.", probably those of the employer, also engraved on the cartridge of the hanger key.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 6 January 1930, this house illustrates the Alsatian bourgeois architecture of the time. The protected elements include facades and roofing, while its decor, typical of the rock style, bears witness to local craftsmanship. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), with an official address confirmed by the Merimée database.
The building is part of Séletat's architectural heritage, a town in Lower Rhine in the Grand East region, where the 18th century bourgeois houses reflect the economic prosperity of pre-industrial Alsace. Its listing among historic monuments underscores its heritage importance, although its access to the public (visit, rental) is not documented in available sources.
