Origin and history

The house at the 3-5 Lice des Cordeliers in Aix-en-Provence is a mansion built in the 17th century. This monument is representative of the civil architecture of this period in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although little documented, it bears witness to the urban development of Aix-en-Provence, a city marked by its administrative and judicial role under the Ancien Régime.

The vantals of the gate of this mansion have been registered as historical monuments since 10 April 1929. This protection highlights a remarkable architectural element, typical of the entrances to private hotels of the time. The exact location, although subject to approximations, is confirmed by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates available.

In Aix-en-Provence in the 17th century, private hotels were often inhabited by bourgeois families or magistrates, reflecting the economic and cultural prosperity of the city. These urban residences played an important social role, providing a forum for meetings and exchanges between local elites. Their architecture, combining classical and regional influences, helped shape the visual identity of the city.
