Origin and history

The Hotel de Cormis, located at 15 rue des Epineaux in Aix-en-Provence, is a private mansion whose initial construction clearly dates back to the first half of the 16th century, although sources also link it to the 18th century for its reference period. Acquired in 1534 by Pierre de Cormis, ancestor of François de Cormis (a famous lawyer born in these places in 1639), he illustrates the social ascension of Aixese families linked to the law and the nobility of dress. Its architecture blends Renaissance elements, such as the 17th century three-way walnut door, decorated with carved bay garlands and a mascaron in high relief, reflecting exceptional craftsmanship.

The entrance door, with its vantals and its impost, was classified as a historic monument by order of April 10, 1929, highlighting its heritage value. Today, the hotel is divided into private apartments and is not accessible to the public. The rue des Epineaux, where it is located, is home to other remarkable hotels such as the Hotel Bonnet (first half of the seventeenth century) and the Hotel de François de Michel (middle 17th century), reflecting the prestige of this historic Aix district.

Historical sources also mention further works or transformations, especially in the 18th century, a period often associated with renovations or additions in Provencal private hotels. The building is thus part of a double temporality: a Renaissance origin and Baroque or classical evolutions. Its present state, although modified by internal divisions, preserves traces of its past fascist, as evidenced by the legal protections on its decorative elements.

The hotel of Cormis is part of a network of private hotels in Aix-en-Provence linked to the legal and commercial elite of the city, characteristic of Aix-en-Provence, the former judicial capital of Provence. These urban residences served both as places of social representation and as family life settings, often passed on over generations. The presence of François de Cormis, prominent figure of the Aixese bar, reinforces its importance in local history.

Finally, documentary sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, specialized works) highlight its architectural and historical interest, while noting uncertainties about certain dates. The exact location (15 rue des Epineaux) and its Insee code (13001) clearly links it to Bouches-du-Rhône, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, confirming its anchoring in the regional heritage.
