The vantals and the impossibility of the door: inscription by decree of 25 March 1929

Origin and history

Fontvert is a private hotel located in Aix-en-Provence, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Built in the 18th century, it is a typical example of the civil architecture of this period in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although little detailed information is available on its history, its status as a historic monument reflects its heritage importance.

The vantals and the doorway of this hotel have been listed as historical monuments since 25 March 1929. This protection highlights the artistic and historical value of these architectural elements, characteristic of the 18th century bourgeois mansions in Aix-en-Provence.

In the 18th century, Aix-en-Provence was a dynamic city, marked by a social elite that built private hotels to display its status. These residences often reflected the taste for luxury and elegance, while serving as places of reception and representation. The Hotel de Fontvert is in this context, illustrating the way of life of the affluent classes of the time.

The location of the hotel, between Littera Street and Adanson Street, suggests integration into the city's historic urban fabric. The private hotels of this period were often located in central neighbourhoods, close to places of power and commerce, thereby strengthening their social and economic role in the city.

Today, the Hotel de Fontvert remains an architectural testimony to the history of Aix. Although information on its current visit or use is limited, its protection as a historic monument ensures the preservation of this heritage for future generations.
