Origin and history

Bussière House is a 16th century Renaissance house located at 22 rue Saint-Étienne in Nevers. It is distinguished by its rich facades and carved motifs, characteristic of the architecture of the period. The house is located at the corner of Rue Saint-Étienne and Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, a prosperous neighborhood in the Middle Ages thanks to a franchise charter granted in 1097.

This house is named after a family of carpenters who inhabited it for a century. Little modified in the 19th century, it was restored in the 20th century, notably in 1995, revealing hidden architectural elements such as a corbellation and sculpture in the piedroit. The house has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1916 for its facades, and other elements were listed in 2010.

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Étienne Street was lined with modest houses housing shops on the ground floor. The Bussière house, with its open facades, bears witness to the prosperity of this neighborhood, then under the authority of the Prior of Saint-Étienne. The inhabitants, free of taxes, enjoyed some autonomy, favouring commercial and artisanal development in this sector of Nevers.
