Origin and history

The House Calmet, listed as a Historical Monument, is a 16th century civil building located in Alet-les-Bains, Aude. It is distinguished by its two-storey facade on the ground floor, with a marked corbellation supported by crows in quarter-round. This architectural detail, typical of the period, is the only decorative element visible on the side wall.

The inscription in the Historical Monuments, dated 14 April 1948, concerns only the corbelled façade. The exact address, 17 Rue Cadène, is confirmed by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates, although the accuracy of the location is considered poor (note 5/10). No information is available on its current use (visit, rental, accommodation).

Alet-les-Bains, an ancient medieval city, was a place of passage and commerce in Languedoc. Corbelled houses, such as the Calmet House, reflect Renaissance urban architecture, where space optimization and facade aesthetics played a central role. These constructions also demonstrate the relative prosperity of some local bourgeois or merchant families.
