Origin and history
La Maison Cavaillé is a medieval civil building located in the hamlet of La Masse, on the territory of the municipality of Junies (Department of Lot, Occitanie region). Built in the early 14th century, it illustrates the rural domestic architecture of this period, with its two L-shaped buildings and its characteristic exterior staircase. The chimney, known as "sarrazine", and its stump, remarkable for their seniority, were classified as historic monuments by order of 15 April 1931, bearing witness to their exceptional heritage value.
The original structure underwent partial windings, especially between 1941 and 1942 (according to oral sources), but retains sufficient traces to restore its original organization. Like other houses in the village, it followed a widespread functional model: the ground floor housed stables and agricultural equipment, while the house, accessible by an external staircase, occupied the floor. The chimney stump, dating from the early 14th century thanks to the shape of its lantern, suggests a construction between the late 13th and early 14th century.
The 1931 classification concerns only the chimney and its strain, highlighting their rarity and their representativeness for medieval occitan habitat. These elements, combined with the L layout and the exterior staircase, offer a preserved example of local constructive techniques. The Junies village, with its similar houses, reflects an agrarian social organization where housing and economic activities were closely linked in the same built space.
Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) also mention restoration or partial reconstruction work in the 20th century, without specifying their exact extent. The exact address, "5093 La Masse, 46150 Les Junies", and the Insee code (46134) confirm its anchoring in the Lotois territory. No information is provided on any historic owners or specific uses beyond their residential and agricultural role.
