Arcade: registration by decree of 14 June 1928
Origin and history
The house located at 34 rue Chaudrier in La Rochelle is an example of urban architecture rebuilt in 1888. It preserves a characteristic old layout, with two separate house bodies framing a middle courtyard. An up-to-date staircase, positioned laterally, connects these two buildings, one of which, anterior, has a lateral corridor, while the other, posterior, has three floors. The facades are lined with arcade porches, a notable architectural element.
The building was partially registered under the Historical Monuments by order of 14 June 1928, specifically concerning its arcades. This protection underscores the heritage value of these elements, witnesses to the constructive techniques and architectural style in vogue in La Rochelle at the end of the 19th century. The house thus illustrates the evolution of bourgeois dwellings of this period, mixing ancient heritage and modern adaptations.
The location of the house, in downtown La Rochelle, reflects its integration into a dense urban fabric, marked by the maritime and commercial history of the city. The arcade porches, typical of local architecture, could serve both as a shelter and a place of sociability, strengthening the link between the private space and the street. The reconstruction of 1888 was part of a period of architectural renewal, when bourgeois houses adopted rational plans while preserving traditional elements.
