Origin and history

This house located in La Rochelle, New Aquitaine, has an architecture typical of 18th century urban dwellings. Its facade, made of cut stone, is organized into four spans, and it has a small posterior courtyard. Access is via a side corridor, leading to a wooden staircase at the bottom of it. This type of arrangement reflects the bourgeois dwellings of the time, adapted to the constraints of the city centres.

The facade of this house dates from the 18th century, while the wooden staircase was added in the mid-19th century. An elevation was achieved in the late 19th or early 20th century, partially changing its original aspect. These transformations illustrate the evolution of architectural needs and techniques over the centuries. The facade (with the exception of the third floor) and arcade were inscribed as Historic Monument by order of 20 June 1928, highlighting their heritage value.

The house is located at 29 rue Dupacy, in downtown La Rochelle, a port town marked by its maritime and commercial history. This type of house, with its inner courtyard and spatial organization, was common in the prosperous cities of the region, serving both as housing and sometimes as a place of economic activity for wealthy families or artisans.
