Arcade: registration by decree of 20 June 1928
Origin and history
This house located in La Rochelle, dated the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, is distinguished by its architecture with two houses connected by a wing housing a staircase. It has a median and a posterior courtyard, with a lateral corridor. The two buildings, of two square floors and an attic, offer a facade in continuity with that of 11 rue des Merciers.
The wooden staircase, partly of the seventeenth century, contrasts with the date of 1737 engraved on the facade. The house arcade has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1928. Although the exact address is 9 rue des Merciers, the GPS location remains approximate, with an accuracy considered fair (5/10).
The monument illustrates the 18th century domestic architecture of Rochelais, mixing the legacy of the previous century and innovations of the time. Its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments underlines its heritage importance, especially for its iconic arcade.
