Origin and history
The house located at 6 rue du Mining in La Rochelle is an emblematic civil building of the late 16th century. Built in the 4th quarter of the 16th century, it illustrates late Renaissance home architecture, with elements such as an arcade and a redesigned facade. Its inscription in the title of historic monuments by order of 27 June 1928 bears witness to its heritage value, including its facade and arcade.
The exact dating of the house is controversial: although generally attributed to the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, chronograms (1610 and 1611) on the porch vault suggest a possible construction in the 1st quarter of the 17th century. A major restoration in 1880 profoundly altered its structure, adding a floor and transforming the original layout, initially composed of two building bodies separated by a courtyard. These changes make it difficult to read its original plan.
The house reflects the urban evolution of La Rochelle, the major port city of the Atlantic. Its architecture, marked by Renaissance influences and subsequent adaptations, is part of a context of economic prosperity linked to maritime trade. The protection of 1928 underscores its importance as a witness to local urban and architectural history, despite the transformations experienced over the centuries.
