Origin and history
This house located at 32 rue du Mining in La Rochelle consists of three building bodies organized around two inner courtyards. The posterior body overlooks the rue du Collège (n°33). The main facade, made of cut stone, has three spans, while the elevations on the courtyard are made of coated stone. The modern side corridor and stairs contrast with 17th century architectural elements still visible in the courtyards.
The street façade was completely rebuilt in the 19th century, marking a major transformation of the building. In the 20th century, significant changes altered its original structure. Only the arcade of the house was protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments on 27 June 1928, testifying to its heritage interest despite successive changes.
The building illustrates the architectural evolution of the urban houses in La Rochelle, where ancient structures (such as 17th century bellows) coexist with later reconstructions. Its plan in three bodies separated by courses reflects a spatial organization typical of the bourgeois or craft houses of the city, adapted to the constraints of the historical urban fabric.
