Origin and history
This house, located at 54 rue du Mining in La Rochelle, is a 17th and 18th century building, representative of the civil architecture of this period. It was partially classified as a Historic Monument, especially for its arcade, protected by ministerial decree in 1928. The precise location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), corresponds to the official address recorded in the Merimée base, confirming its anchoring in the historic district of the city.
La Rochelle, the major port of the Atlantic, was at that time an intense commercial and maritime activity. The bourgeois houses, like this one, reflected the prosperity of local traders and shipowners. Their architecture often blended defensive elements inherited from previous centuries with more refined ornaments, symbols of social status. These buildings were used as both residence, place of trade and sometimes warehouse for goods.
Available sources, including Monumentum, indicate that this house is subject to heritage monitoring but does not specify its current use (visit, rental, or private dwelling). Its arcade, a remarkable architectural element, illustrates the influence of classical styles which then spread in French port cities, marking a transition between medieval and modern times.
