Origin and history
The house at 63 rue du Mining in La Rochelle is a historical monument dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It consists of two separate building bodies, separated by a courtyard now covered. The facade, in coated stone, has two spans, and access is via a side corridor. The wooden staircase with a full ramp is located on the edge of the courtyard.
This house forms an architectural continuity with the neighbouring house, located at number 61. The arches overlooking the street were raised in the 19th century, as was the staircase, which also dates from this period. The arcade of the house has been protected by an inscription under the title of Historical Monuments since 27 June 1928.
The location of this monument, in the historic centre of La Rochelle, reflects the typical town planning of this port city, marked by stone houses and inner courtyards. The rue du Mining, where it is located, is emblematic of the local architectural heritage, mixing medieval and classical influences.
