Origin and history
This house, located at 67 rue du Mining in La Rochelle, is a 17th and 18th century building, representative of the civil architecture of this period. It was partially protected under the Historical Monuments, notably for its arcade, which was registered by ministerial decree in 1928. This type of building illustrates the urban evolution of La Rochelle, the major port of the Atlantic under the Ancien Régime, where the houses of merchants and artisans marked the landscape.
The location of this house, in the historic centre of La Rochelle, reflects the importance of the mining district, linked to port and commercial activities. At that time, the city was an economic crossroads, and bourgeois or artisanal houses, like this one, served both as a dwelling and as a place of work. Their preservation today offers a tangible testimony of everyday life and architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries in Poitou-Charentes (now New Aquitaine).
