Origin and history
The house at 17 rue du Palais in La Rochelle is a civil building dating from the 18th century. This monument, whose arcade was inscribed by ministerial decree on 29 September 1928, bears witness to the domestic architecture of that time in a city marked by its harbour and commercial activity. The precise location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), places the building in the historic heart of La Rochelle, in Charente-Maritime (department 17), Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
At that time, La Rochelle was a dynamic port, integrated into Atlantic trade networks, particularly with the West Indies and North America. The bourgeois houses, like this one, reflected the prosperity of local traders and shipowners. These buildings served as both a residence and a place of social representation, often organized around remarkable interior courtyards or architectural elements, such as arcades.
Their preservation today offers an overview of the urban heritage and lifestyles of the commercial elites of the Enlightenment century.
