Origin and history

This house in La Rochelle, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, is an example of civil architecture of this period. It is distinguished by its middle courtyard, its bell-coated façade, and a side corridor leading to a wooden staircase, located in an adjacent wing. The staircase, originally designed with a ramp, was rebuilt in the 19th century, marking an evolution in its architectural history.

The façade and arcade of this house were protected by an inscription under the Historical Monuments on 29 September 1928. This ranking highlights remarkable elements such as the carved pediment dot, typical of the bourgeois or merchant houses of La Rochelle at that time. The precise address, 6 rue Pernelle, confirms its anchoring in the historic centre of the city, although the GPS location is considered of poor accuracy (note 5/10).

The building reflects the characteristics of urban houses in the region, built for wealthy families or traders. Its plan, with a central courtyard and organised spaces around it, illustrates an adaptation to the residential and professional needs of the period. The mention of a Creative Commons license for available photos suggests a contemporary interest in its preservation and heritage enhancement.
