Origin and history
This house of the 4th quarter of the 15th century is located in one of the oldest streets of La Rochelle, leading to the great shore, a historic harbour space extending from the tower of the Chain to the bridge Saint-Sauveur. The street was protected by a door built into the 14th century enclosure, built to defend the port. This building, with the building next to n°6, is one of the only two buildings of the 15th or 16th centuries still standing in this area.
The facade has a typical structure in wooden panels, with half-timbered bricks covered with lime coating. The woods are protected by nailed slates, a common technique to preserve the material from the weather. The ground floor, marked by a wide opening, suggests an original commercial vocation, probably a shop or a workshop.
Classified as a Historic Monument, the house saw its facades on the street and its roofs protected by decree of 15 January 1965. Its location, on 4 rue du Port, makes it a precious vestige of medieval town planning in the Rock, linked to the port and merchant activity of the city. The accuracy of its current location is estimated to be fair (note 5/10), based on available data.
