Origin and history

This house of the 4th quarter of the 15th century is located in one of the oldest streets of La Rochelle, leading to the great bank which connected the tower of the Chain to the bridge Saint-Sauveur. It bears witness to the fortified enclosure of the fourteenth century protecting the port, whose door defended this access. With the neighbouring building (no.4 rue du Port), it is one of the only two buildings of the 15th or 16th centuries still standing in this area.

The wooden panel facade features a corbelled half-timber on an intersoil above a shop. The brick upholstery, covered with coating, and the wooden panels protected by nailed slates illustrate the constructive techniques of the time. The ground floor retains a wide opening typical of medieval shops. These features make it a precious vestige of the civil architecture of Rochelais.

Classified as a Historic Monument, the house saw its facades on street and corresponding roofs protected by decree of 15 January 1965. Its exact address, 6 rue du Port, corresponds to cadastre C 306. The location, although documented, is considered satisfactory (note 6/10) according to available sources.
