Origin and history

The House, located 82 rue Georges-Clemenceau in Marennes-Hiers-Brouage, is a building dating from the 3rd quarter of the 16th century. This building, known as Hotel des Fermes, served as the headquarters of the farm office under the Old Regime, an institution responsible for collecting royal taxes. Its architecture reflects this administrative function, with a body of houses structured around a stairway with a projected octagonal cage, typical of the buildings of this period.

Listed as historical monuments by order of 4 February 1927, the House then housed the House of Notaries, marking its evolution towards legal and civil usages. The building preserves original architectural elements, such as the old windows and a gate-protected courtyard, reflecting its history and past status.

Today, the House remains a remarkable example of the civil heritage of Charente-Maritime, illustrating both Renaissance architecture and the functional transformations of public buildings under the Old Regime. Its inclusion among historical monuments underlines its importance in local and regional history, linked to the administrative and fiscal management of the modern period.
