Origin and history

The Claude Debussy House, located 38 rue au Pain in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, is a 1680 building built thanks to dendrochronology. It is distinguished by its stone-cut facades, its long-paned roof on the street and its courtyard appentis. This building, typical of 17th century civil architecture, houses a baluster staircase protected by the Historical Monuments since 1972.

Claude Debussy was born there in 1862, when his parents operated a factory trade there. The house was acquired in 1980 by the municipality, which installed a museum dedicated to the composer and the tourist office. Changes were then made: removal of the gangway serving the courtyard, removal of the bands separating the floors, transformation of the skylights and reconstitution of a continuous cornice.

Protected elements include facades, roofs and baluster staircases. The site, although partially modified, retains heritage value related to both its architecture and its musical history. The location, noted as poor (5/10) in the databases, corresponds to the address 38 rue au Pain, in the Yvelines.
