Solar dial: inscription by decree of 29 November 1948
Origin and history
The town house of Villars-Colmars is a building dating from the 4th quarter of the 17th century, located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This building, owned by the municipality, is distinguished by its sundial, classified as Monument Historique by decree of 29 November 1948. Although its exact location is approximate (estimated accuracy at 5/10), there remains an architectural testimony of this period in south-eastern France.
At the end of the 17th century, communal houses played a central role in the local administration of provençal villages. They served as a meeting place for assemblies, a framework for collective decisions and, sometimes, a space for justice or archives. In a rural context marked by agriculture and livestock, these buildings symbolized municipal authority and community cohesion.
Their architecture, often sober, reflected local resources and the practical needs of the inhabitants. The solar dial, a decorative and utilitarian element, illustrates the importance attached to measuring time in pre-industrial societies, where agricultural rhythms dominated daily life.
