House of the sixteenth century: inscription by decree of 26 May 1926
Origin and history
The house located Carnot Square in Arnay-le-Duc is a 16th century civil building, typical of Burgundy Renaissance architecture. Its inscription as Historic Monument by order of 26 May 1926 underlines its heritage importance, although the precise details of its construction or its first occupants remain undocumented in the available sources. Arnay-le-Duc, located in the present department of the Côte-d-Or (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté), was at that time a city marked by artisanal and commercial activities.
Bourgeois houses like this often served as residences for merchants, local notables or judicial officers, reflecting the region's relative prosperity under the Old Regime. Their preservation offers today an overview of lifestyles and urban planning of the 16th and 17th centuries in Burgundy.
