House of the fifteenth century (Box E 739): inscription by order of 26 May 1926

Origin and history

The house located in Vitteaux, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a civil building dating from the second half of the 15th century. This monument illustrates the Burgundian domestic architecture of the late Middle Ages, a period marked by relative economic and social stability after the unrest of the Hundred Years War. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by decree of 26 May 1926 bears witness to its heritage value, particularly for its state of conservation and its stylistic characteristics peculiar to the period.

At the end of the 15th century, Burgundy, then under the influence of the duchy of the same name, experienced an urban and artisanal boom. Bourgeois or merchant houses, such as that of Viteaux, reflect this growing prosperity. They serve both as a place of residence, a workshop or a trade, playing a central role in local life. Their stone construction, often on several levels, meets the needs for sustainability and social representation of the owners, members of the urban or rural elite.

The precise address of the house, 2 rue Pelletier-de-Chambure, is documented in the Mérimée base, confirming its anchoring in the historical fabric of Viteaux. The location, although considered "passable" (note 5/10) by the sources, makes it possible to identify the building as a landmark of the built heritage of the municipality. No information is available on its current use (visit, rental, etc.), or on any historic owners or sponsors.
