Origin and history
The house Cudel de Montcolon is a mansion located in Place du Cours (today Place Reverchon) in Marcigny, in the department of Saône-et-Loire. Built in 1735 by the Cudel de Montcolon family, originally from the Aube and installed in the area since 1624, it bears the trace of this date engraved on its facade on the garden side. The rectangular building is distinguished by a main façade decorated with a triangular pediment and a wrought iron balcony, reflecting the classic architectural style of the 18th century.
During the French Revolution, the family emigrated, leaving the house vacant. She was then requisitioned to serve as a prison. After this troubled period, the legacy belongs to Gilbert de Cudel, who had fought under the Terror alongside his uncle, General de Précy. Without descendants, Gilbert left the property to the Orsel family of Sagets in the early 19th century. The house retains remarkable elements, such as a vaulted hall accessible from the basement.
Classified as a historical monument since 5 January 1955 for its facades and roofs, the house Cudel de Montcolon illustrates both local history and the political upheavals of its time. Its architecture, with its two square floors and its roof in mechanical tiles, makes it a typical example of 18th-century provincial private hotels. Today, it remains a testimony of Burgundy heritage, although its current use (housing or other) is not specified in the available sources.
