Origin and history
Niort's arrest house, built between 1845 and 1853 by architect Segrétain, illustrates the 19th century prison reforms. Designed for 80 inmates, it adopts a semi-circular plan adjacent to a rectangular building, surrounded by walls and courtyards. This model responds to the directives of the Minister of Interior Duchâtel (1841), who advocated optimal supervision and rational organization of prison spaces.
The architecture rests on a semicircular room housing cells spread over three levels, served by stairways and advanced corridors. A guard, stationed at the foot of an open-air central edicle (hosting a chapel on the top floor), could monitor all cells. The structure combines bricks and plaster, with a fan vault leading to lantern bays. This mechanism reflects the theories of the time on isolation and rehabilitation through architecture.
Classified as a Historical Monument since 1987, the prison embodies debates on the prison system in the 19th century, combining security constraints and humanist concerns. Its inscription concerns the entire building (cadastre BP 29), highlighting its heritage and architectural interest. The location, rue du Sanitat in Niort, confirms its anchoring in the urban fabric of the period, close to the courthouse.
