Covered gallery: inscription by order of 25 June 1929
Origin and history
The house of Espéronnat is integrated into a remarkable architectural ensemble of Mirepoix, known as the Cutlery. These covered gallery houses, typical of medieval and post-medieval urbanism, form a semi-public sheltered space, often dedicated to commercial and social exchanges. Their wooden or stone structure, with arcades or pillars, reflects local construction techniques and weather protection needs.
The inscription of the covered gallery of the House of Hope in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 25 June 1929 underlines its heritage importance. This classification aims to preserve a representative element of the ancient building of Mirepoix, a city marked by rich medieval history and characteristic civil architecture. The Cutlery, as a collective space, also illustrated the central role of covered squares and streets in the daily life of Occitan cities, between market, meeting place and shelter.
The precise location of the house, at 7 Place Philippe de Lévis in Mirepoix (Ariège), is attested by the data of the Merimée database. This position, at the heart of a historic village, strengthens its anchoring in the urban fabric and its link to local history. The lack of details about its exact origin or initial owners, however, limits the knowledge of its evolution before the twentieth century.
