Origin and history

The house of Olivier de Serres is a civil building located in Villeneuve-de-Berg, in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, it is a typical example of the domestic architecture of this period in south-eastern France. The building was classified as historical monuments by order of 10 October 1927, in particular for its stone niche housing a statue of the Virgin, a protected element.

Villeneuve-de-Berg, like many localities in the Ardèche at that time, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Bourgeois or notable houses, such as that of Olivier de Serres, often played a central role in the social and administrative life of villages. Their preservation today offers a valuable testimony to the lifestyles and spatial organization of local communities under the Old Regime.

The precise location of the house is indicated in the Mérimée base as being located at the crossing of the Grande-Rue and Rue Saint-Louis, with an approximate address at 10 Rue Nationale. This information reflects the integration of the monument into the historic urban fabric of Villeneuve-de-Berg, although cartographic accuracy is assessed as poor (level 5 of 10).
