Maison de Descartes: by order of 9 July 1927
Origin and history
The Maison de Descartes in Châtellerault is an emblematic monument located in the city of the same name. This building, whose architecture dates back to the first half of the 16th century, bears witness to the local historical heritage. Although his name evokes the philosopher René Descartes, no information in available sources confirms a direct link between him and this house.
During the Renaissance, urban houses like this often reflected the growth of cities and the development of craft and commercial activities. Châtellerault, located in a dynamic region, then enjoyed a strategic position between north and southwestern France. These houses generally served as a place of life for bourgeois families or local notables, while sometimes playing a role in the economic and social life of the city.
