Origin and history

The house of Gassies is an urban residence located in Saint-Macaire, in the department of Gironde, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by architectural elements typical of the Renaissance, such as a tower with a staircase, period fireplaces and sill windows. These features are a valuable testimony to the civil architecture of this period.

The house was rebuilt by Ysabeau de Gassies, whose name remains associated with the building. Although partially distorted by restorations carried out in the 19th century, it retains much of its original character. These later interventions altered certain aspects of its structure but did not completely erase the traces of its original design.

Classified under the title of historical monuments by order of 25 July 2002, the house of Gassies includes, in its protection, the entire building and its adjoining courtyards. This ranking underscores its heritage importance and ensures its preservation for future generations. The exact address, 12 rue Yquem, places the monument in the heart of the old town of Saint-Macaire, strengthening its anchor in the local historical fabric.
